The Showrunner Reveals He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Does the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
