The people of Israel observe two-year anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace talks proceed
People have gathered throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on October 7th, 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of people killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a minute's silence was held throughout the country.
Negotiation Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives met in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to review the provisions of the plan.
A prominent delegate familiar with the discussions revealed that an late session of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The representative explained the day's discussions ended without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Essential Issues in Talks
- A permanent ceasefire
- The exchange of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- Post-war governance of the area
Civilian Feeling
In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until all the hostages return none of us will be secure."
"Once we see all home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.
In front of the leader's home in the capital, people congregated to show their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel states forty-eight stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise required for the hostages to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that around seventy percent of the population prefer the war to conclude in return for the liberation of the abducted.
Palestinian Conditions

From there, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli shelling carried on.

"My family are afraid of the bombings. During nighttime we are lying together, embracing, notably my youngest child who rests his head on me all night."
"Continuously we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
