Playwright Jeremy O. Harris Detained in the island nation for Suspected Drug Smuggling

U.S. thespian and writer Jeremy O Harris, best known for the Tony-nominated production Slave Play, was taken into custody last month at an airport in Japan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle controlled substances into the country, officials stated.

Details of the Airport Apprehension

Harris, 36, was intercepted on 16 November at Naha airport, situated in Okinawa, after a customs officer found 0.78 grams of a crystal material laced with the designer drug MDMA in his personal bag, according to a customs spokesperson.

He was immediately arrested on suspicion of violating Japan’s stringent Narcotics and Psychotropics Control Act.

Local customs officials filed a criminal accusation with the public prosecutor to commence legal action against the playwright.

Current Status and Legal Representation

A police official in Tomigusuku, Okinawa, verified that Harris is still being held. The official did not elaborate on whether Harris has admitted to the charges.

At this time, it is not known whether the figure has secured a defense attorney in Japan. Requests for comment to his management team were not answered at once.

Journey Details and Destination

Authorities stated Harris had traveled to Okinawa for tourism, journeying from Britain via a connecting flight in Taiwan. Okinawa is a frequent tourist spot south-west of Tokyo, known for its coastlines and U.S. bases.
