Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

Officials disputes these allegations, just as it disavows everything it is charged with. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, although a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that international journalists are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for.
