Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a wide array of personalities, and a thrilling plot including divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences expanding in power within Dol-Makjar.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the latest installment of this adventure are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

The third episode ended with a huge suspense moment and revealed the premier party of characters who will branch out from the main group to begin their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team includes Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was evident from the outset that maintaining everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Introduction, weaving together the characters’ stories before splitting into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Schemers, and Questers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might look out of place, but the actions of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

First, the party has a clear idea where to head next after a intense first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose demise kicked off the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, invading the secret base, striking Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to dispose of.

Casimir then paid off his obligations and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a specific drive to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and trusted friend, wants retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure knows Timmony and warns that it is a hostile environment.
  • The strong character and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute the target and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their position as key figures in the influential clan could enable the team enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Additionally, Teor vowed a life debt to The savior for his salvation and will now follow him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The cleric defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This results in them few options but to journey toward the remote area in search of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

Based on the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Questers and Strategists tables.

Viewers can look forward to finding out which characters will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
