British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
