Britain Prepared to Employ Seized Russia's Assets to Support the Ukrainian War Effort
The United Kingdom is prepared to move forward with using the total value of immobilized Russian funds to bolster Ukraine's defense operations, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has declared.
In a shared declaration, the heads of state of the UK, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany emphasized that this joint measure would heighten pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and persuade the Russian Federation to engage in negotiations.
They added that the decision would be implemented in strong partnership with the America.
British restrictions have blocked over £25bn of Russian assets since Russia launched its full-scale invasion against Ukraine in 2022. But, previously, resources provided to the Ukrainian government using Russian holdings had solely been taken from profits and interest generated on them.
Sir Keir told Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky that the United Kingdom, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany were aligned in their aim to advance efforts toward employing the total worth of the seized Russia's state assets to halt hostilities.
He added that additional restrictions over the next period would apply more pressure on the Russian government.
This announcement is subsequent to European representatives gathered in Copenhagen last week to discuss employing frozen Russian holdings for a €140bn loan to Ukraine.
Recently, US President Donald Trump encouraged G7 allies to take or employ seized Russian funds, based on reports.
The worth of frozen Russia's funds in the Europe is calculated to be almost €211bn.
President Zelensky encourages Britain's Sir Keir Starmer to join the weapons procurement initiative
Russia carried out large-scale bombardments across the Ukrainian territory on Friday, leading to power cuts in many areas of Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and multiple additional areas.
Two people were fatally injured and at least 20 people were wounded in the strike, authorities in Ukraine said.
In a update on an online platform after the attack, Zelensky stated that the cynical and calculated attack targeted public and utility structures.
"What's needed is not mere statements but firm measures - from the United States, Europe, and the Group of Seven - in delivering anti-aircraft weapons and applying sanctions," he wrote.
"All penalty impositions weakens Moscow's military apparatus," Zelensky noted, in a additional update.
Additionally that day, Zelensky informed the press he would encourage Sir Keir to join the PURL scheme, under which partner nations acquire arms from the US to provide to Ukraine.
While applauding the UK's strong support for Ukraine, he remarked it should send a clear signal that it would take part in the system, as well as apply further measures on the Russian Federation.
